About me:
My name is Richard Rasner, and I photograph nudes for a living. It is my only job; I am an actual functioning professional artist.
I had originally started this account to view the work of my friends more easily, but I found it to be an invaluable critique tool for my own work once I started posting stuff. As of right now I only post some of my images here from the thousands that I have taken over the years, but they are the ones that I am particularly fond of, and those I offer as prints (often but not always the same thing.) From any new series I'm working on you can always see 3 to 10 images of what is usually a series of 25 images or more. (What I'm basically trying to say is, this is not all of my work by a long shot.) deviantART also gives me an outlet for other stuff that I wouldn't normally put on my regular portfolio site, such as my new business card designs, some random photojournalism and so on. Most recently, the invitation-only deviantFILM has given me a place to display my budding inner filmmaker (I ♥ documentary-style stuff.)

Around the world:
A question I get asked often is: Where are you located? Which is often followed by "Can I be an assistant on one of your shoots?" or more commonly "Can I come model for you?" If the question is the former, the answer is probably no. If it's the latter, it's probably yes. But let's start with location:
I currently split my time pretty evenly between Las Vegas, NV & Riverside, CA (near Los Angeles.) If you plan on traveling either to Sin City or Southern California and you're interested in meeting with me (either to model, have a print or book signed, etc) drop me a note and I'll do my best to accommodate you. If you are really interested in modeling for me, be sure to read the Models & Modeling journal entry.
I shoot regularly at Nakayama Studios/Loft 24 in Las Vegas, NV, which is my personal studio; and also at D.M. Gremlin Studios in Long Beach, CA, which is owned by my friend =wynnesome. Both studios are available for rent if you're interested in shooting at the same places that I have.
International travel locations for 2008-2009 include: Lodz (Poland), Boracay (The Philippines) & Moscow (Russia.)

Recently I have even taken to posting brand new images, selecting a few off of my personal website to post here for critique before I submit them to art venues. I find dA is a great sounding board of the general public. I have also met some great people here on deviantART (including people who later modeled for me) and a lot of fans who have submitted 'fan art' images based on my work, which I love. I even have a special section on my portfolio site set aside to display them. Speaking of which...

Sorry guys, my work *isn't* stock, and you can't use it as such, especially not for resale. However, if you are truly inspired by my stuff let me know -- I have granted over 50 artists here on dA access to my work, even going so far as to supply them with higher resolution images for use. And "fan art" (drawings, paintings, sculptures and so on) inspired by my work (but not directly utilizing it) usually gets a place of honor on my website. If you have used a piece of mine be sure and let me know; chances are as long as it isn't violating any Copyrights (some of my work for Motion Pictures and my books are jointly held ©'s) I'll give you my blessing, and even link to it from the original.

My friend and model ~SongbirdSighing bought me a prints account, and so you can now purchase my prints directly from dA, rather than from my gallery showings and book signings. (It's quite a bit cheaper here at the default dA prices, rather than the $500 my work goes for when signed and framed at shows.)

Critique, flaming, and your views on "nude art = porn":
And now, a serious word about critique: Many of these images have been around for years, and many have won awards and almost all (except the most very recent) have been publicly shown in art galleries. That means I am pretty happy with the way they are but I am open to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Even if you dislike my work, please tell me in a way that is respectful and (hopefully) productive. I have already reported at least 6 people who were later banned from dA for their childish, rude, and/or profane comments on my work, and I won't hesitate to report anyone else who can't follow deviantART's very simple rules of conduct. All I ask is that you play nice. (My open letter to one would-be armchair critic can be found here: [link] ) And if you don't like nudes, please turn on your 'Mature' filter. I'm not interested in why you think nudes aren't a "legitimate" art form, and/or why I never should have gotten any Staff Picks/Daily Deviations.

So you want to be a model:
Modeling for me does not mean you need to be super-pretty and/or super-skinny. In fact, even a cursory check of my gallery will show you that I photograph everyone from stunning professional models to very average amateurs. The main requirements are that you live in Southern California or Southern Nevada or be willing to travel there, and that you truly have a desire to create art, not just make money.
If you're truly interested, Read this FAQ on my website and then fill out the questionnaire at the bottom of the page. E-mail it, along with a photo to info@uniquenudes.com and we'll get something set up as soon as my schedule permits.
Models from other areas around the U.S. (and even internationally) may also fill out the questionaire and if I am ever in your area on a shooting tour we can get a shoot set up as well. I look forward to hearing from some of you!

My Equipment:
Since I've been getting asked a lot lately, here is a list of my primary equipment, as far as cameras and lenses go. You'll note that it is all Canon cameras and lenses (save for a few specialty lenses.) The reason for this is very simple: I love Canon optics (as they alone work best for my trickier work like UV images) and they recently sponsored me! What does that mean exactly? Well, I get lenses and camera bodies at a discount, and often in advance of when they are being released to the public. In return, Canon gets to say "Richard Rasner uses Canon Cameras" in their advertisements.

In addition to the above I also use the following equipment for lighting and such:
When I shoot studio work (which is rare at best) I use hot lights (continuous output lighting, not flash) as I feel it looks more natural. I like Smith-Vector for lights, and I only use Manfrotto light stands. Yeah, I'm kind of a purist. I also exclusively use Manfrotto tripods and heads. On the extremely rare occasions I do use flash, I use a Canon (duh) 550EX Speedlite to trigger Alien Bee slaves. I'm not terribly picky about which lens filters I use as long as they are A) coated and B) not square, and my case is filled with various Canon, Cokin, Quantaray, Hoya and other filters. _{(Update: My Canon rep read this and is sent me all Canon UV filters for protection of my lenses. I still use various other polarizers and FX filters though.)}


I am currently using Photoshop CS3 (Extended) ver 10.0 for all of my digital photo processing.

Happy Anniversary to me!

I've been on dA for 2 years as of today, and I am amazed how much I've become a part of this site. I've been keeping track of how my dA site has grown every month since I started, and you can see those stats here: [link]

I *love* this website. I'm definately an addict, and those of you that watch me know I post a new photo at least a few times a week. That's because I am always working, so I'm always looking for a place to get feedback.

Just through the deviantART website (and not including shows and book signings) I have sold over 500 prints.

My most popular image was featured as a Daily Deviation (Staff Pick) and is entitled Urban Mermaid. It has almost 13,000 views and over 500 favorites.
My most awarded image (on dA) is Yuuin featuring the same model, =Gwendelin-Artanis.
My best-selling print of all times is still Sleeping Dryad featuring the ever-popular ~SpikeyClover.

Thanks to everyone who has supported me over the last 2 years, including my fans for buying, commenting and faving my work, my models for obviously being the most intricate part of my work, the dA staff for bringing me on board as a beta-tester for the new version 5.0 and continuing to support my efforts, and anyone else I may have forgotten; you are all loved and admired.

Notice: My friends list (below) contains the icons of people I actually know in real life and/or have had meaningful contact here on dA with. (It's true! I met $spyed at the beta-test for version 5.0, and *BT011010 at the Binary Universe premiere.) I am, however, watching a number of other great artists here on deviantART which are equally as talented.

So I just got back from the dA party, and WOW was I blown away. But here's the deal, from the beginning:

I arrived (by myself this time, instead of the usual entourage, like last time) and although +Waveswinger said she would put me on the VIP list, for some reason I wasn't. No big deal, it was only a $5 cover charge. Once inside, I did see +Waveswinger (with a stylish new haircut; did I mention she is teh hotness?) but I didn't get much chance to chat with her. I decided to sit down for dinner and by chance I was sat down next to =Aun-Juli, one of the featured artists for the evening. She turned out to be a really nice person so I spent most of the evening talking to her and her fiance, George. At some point $spyed made it a point to drop by my table to shake my hand and say hi; I really think Angelo is one hell of a guy.
The tables we were sitting at were marked reserved, but the waitress assured us that was o.k. But mere moments later Brian Transeau (yes, the BT, aka *BT011010) sat down next to me wondering who the stranger was at his table. We chatted a bit, and he was very cool about the table thing. As the movie progressed BT and I talked a bit more; he told me about his excitement for dA and some of his upcoming projects. He also signed a poster for me for the Nakayama Studios "Wall of Fame." (Where I put all the other signed posters I have recieved from various movies and plays I have photographed.)
The movie/album was FUCKING AMAZING. The last two movements (one with a 110 piece orchestra) were mindblowing; the latter being a tribute to his 3 year old daughter... very touching and powerful. If you *ever* get a chance to see it you REALLY need to. You won't be disappointed.
Anyhow, I only snapped a few photos (including a really bad one of $spyed, sorry about that buddy) but I've linked them below interspersed with scenes from the film... Good stuff!
